A flat sheet is a rectangular piece of fabric that is longer and wider than the dimensions of your mattress, meaning it can be tucked under the mattress or between the mattress and bed frame. A fitted sheet holds in place even if you toss and turn in the night because they are elasticated in the corners. A third type of bed sheet is a valance which can be used to cover a divan.
