Looking After Your Upholstery

Protecting and caring for your upholstery

Fabric & Leather upholstery in a normal home environment should require little attention and cleaning should only be done when necessary.

For regular maintenance, dust or vacuum occasionally, or in hot, dry weather, use a soft, slightly damp cloth, and wipe gently without rubbing.

If the leather starts to feel overly dry, we recommend you apply a small amount of Leather treatment or protection cream with a cotton cloth, allow the leather to dry, then polish gently with a dry cotton cloth. This will restore the natural feel and suppleness of the leather. The use of non-recommended cleaners could irreparably damage the leather, causing cracks and discolouring. Always pay attention to the products instructions and test on an inconspicuous area first.

If you have a spillage on your upholstery, immediately dab off excess liquids and solids, always work from the edge of the stain inward to avoid spreading. Do not use an abrasive cloth or rub excessively.

We highly recommend that the fabric or leather is not put in direct exposure to sunlight and heat, as this may cause the colour to fade unevenly over time. Should the product get wet, remove any residual water immediately with a paper towel and allow to dry naturally.

Avoid placing your furniture close to heat sources, such as heaters or radiators.

To ensure that your upholstery keeps its shape we recommend regular maintenance of the seat and back cushions especially. Both attached and removable cushions should be plumped regularly to prevent sagging. Also, if your upholstery has loose cushions that can be rotated periodically, this also helps to maintain the shape and helps to ensure equal wear of your cushions.

Leather Types Explained

Pioneer is a premium full-grain aniline pull-up leather. It is dyed all the way through, then treated with a mix of oils and waxes before being vacuum dried. This enhances the soft fullbodied leather sensation and the natural, rich and transparent look that becomes even more beautiful with age. Pioneer leather retains its original grain and structure, which means that colour nuances in different areas of the furniture, natural marks and skin blemishes will occur. These are typical characteristics of a natural material like Pioneer leather. Pioneer absorbs moisture easily and is vulnerable to heat, sunlight, spills and perspiration. Regular maintenance is important to keep the luxurious and elegant appearance.

Batick is a corrected, pigment improved and grain embossed upholstery leather, which has had most of its natural marks removed, and a two-tone colour effect to bring it to life. Batick leather is resistant to fading, although it is normal for changes in colour to occur over time due to use and exposure to light. A protective layer of lacquer simplifies cleaning. Simple cleaning, excellent utilisation properties and a favourable price make Batick a good choice.

Cori is a corrected, pigment improved and grain embossed upholstery leather. Cori has a substantial body and a distinct pebbled grain. Most of its natural marks are removed. Cori has a tip-shine which adds depth and character to the surface.  Some colours have two-tone/ tone-on-tone effect.  A protective layer of lacquer simplifies cleaning. Cori is a wise choice if you want leather with excellent utilisation properties, a robust structure and an exclusive look.

Paloma is a slightly corrected leather with a combination of dyes and pigments that smoothes down some of the structure (the grain pattern) of the leather. The grain structure in Paloma may however vary a little at some parts of the furniture and also minor colour nuances may appear in the leather. Natural marks, scars and insect bites are natural and will appear in Paloma. A thin coat of lacquer gives Paloma some protection and simplifies cleaning, but Paloma does not have the same heavy duty quality and protection as Batick and Classic. Due to its soft, natural and comfortable expression, Paloma is a very popular choice.

Noblesse is the most exclusive leather quality offered by Stressless. It is a full grain semi-aniline, which means that it is dyed all the way through and has only a thin protective topcoat. This allows the leather to keep the natural softness and lustre that characterises a first-class furniture leather. A natural material like Noblesse retains its original grain and structure. Minor colour nuances and skin blemishes may also occur. Such individual details could lead to slight variations in different parts of the furniture cover. Although the topcoat provides a measure of protection, Noblesse is the most delicate of the leather qualities that Stressless uses. It absorbs moisture easily, and is more vulnerable to wear and tear, heat, sunlight, spills and perspiration. Regular maintenance is important to keep its attractive appearance.

Important information if you are buying leather furniture:  As leather is a natural product, colour nuances are normal and colours might vary slightly from one product to another. The leather is sensitive to direct sunlight, stains and perspiration, and colour change will occur with time due to use and the effect of light. Marks left by scars and insect bites are a natural feature of leather with natural grain. Remember that furniture should be protected from direct sunlight and heating sources.
